If you’re a gamer, you probably noticed all the new stuff being announces at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles. I’m super excited, especially about all the announcements from Sony and Nintendo.

Lots of people are excited for different consoles and their respective games, LIKE THE 3DS. So here’s your chance to win one! TF2 cover images from the class trailers, courtesy of a nice anon on /v/. It’s still one of the best FPS games I’ve played despite it’s shortcomings, and a game that can be enjoyed by people who do not regularly enjoy FPS games.

Actually, fuck all of you up there because when I was searching for a job, no one wanted me because I was white. Every place I went that found out I wasn’t Mexican or black suddenly had no interest in me and less qualified people got my position. I was the only white person out of 250+ employees at my last job and I got that job only because I knew someone. So actually, being someone other than white makes getting a job easier these days because jobs have some sort of “quota” to fill with “minorities.”

There’s actually no such thing as filling “race quotas” because having quotas for race is against the law. You being unqualified against people of color who are qualified makes you think (because you’re a racist) that they were all unqualified and less qualified than you and were only able to be employed because of your imaginary “quotas” because to YOU, people of color have no merit or worth and can’t earn anything they have— they just have things handed to them because of their race (according to you). And you think you’re more deserving of these things because you are white and therefor inherently more deserving. Though statistics and numbers would prove you wrong about that and about your false notion that white people have a harder time getting jobs

Except Ariel wasn’t trying to fit into society. Ariel was going AGAINST society to try and become the person she wanted to be.

Her entire story is about being who you want to be- even if your family doesn’t support you, even if other people make it hard for you, even if you can’t talk to other people and make them understand. Ariel knew what she wanted and she went out and made it happen.

And I think it’s kind of crummy to twist her story around with this kind of trivial misreading.

yes lets just ignore the fact that she wanted to change who she was for a man.

Except, as we’ve been discussing, it isn’t really for Eric.

Ariel wanted to go to the surface before she met Eric. She thought of the surface as a place of freedom and empowerment. A place where she could do and be what she liked. Remember, “bright young women, sick of swimming, ready to stand”?

When she meets Eric, she doesn’t instantly run off. She rescues him, takes him back to the beach, and then goes home. She still wants that future, but is willing to wait.

THEN Her father shows up in her space, smashes all of her stuff, and forbids her to ever go to the surface. THAT is her tipping point.

It isn’t as simple as “Ariel wanted a boyfriend.” It was “Ariel had associated this place, and eventually yes this person, with freedom, empowerment, and being the person she wants to be. When her father refuses to accept her for who she is in a very VIOLENT fit of rage, Ariel removes herself from a place where she doesn’t feel safe or accepted and tries to achieve her dreams on her own.”

There are some problematic elements with this movie, yes. But Ariel wanting to go to te surface and leaving her family to do so isn’t one of them.

I am SO SICK of people saying she changed “for a man” when in reality, the man in her life (her father) threatened her with ultimatums and VIOLENCE and made her feel unsafe, unsupported, and so devastated, that she literally FLED THE OCEAN. she dreamed of living in the surface world since scene one where she collects her treasures, but she doesnt act on it outside of visiting a seagull at the surface, but when her father lost his temper and destroyed all her stuff in a fit of rage, she chose that time to act. if the Sea Witch didn’t make “true love’s kiss” a condition of their agreement, she might not have even pursued Eric at that point. She wanted to be a part of the world, and when Eric takes her out to see the kingdom, she is more impressed by handpuppets and dancing than his charming good looks. Kissing him was her only way of STAYING there, and i’m not saying she didn’t like him, but i think if she didn’t HAVE to kiss him within three days, she would have been more than happy to just run around in the surface world and learn all she could for some time before she looked for Eric.

Ariel is my princess, DO NOT BADMOUTH HER!

She is a victim for the Misogyny of her father and his kingdom, and then of the seawitch and all her singing about a woman’s role in the surface world and putting it on Ariel to have to use her “body language” to kiss a guy within 3 days (also calling her a tramp for trying) …

She is fearless, saving her friend from a shark, entering a world she knows close to nothing about, and taking on the seawitch to save Eric. She is brave. She is smart. She is an open-minded free thinker. She was raised to believe prejudices and was the only one who saw the beauty of the vilified surface-world culture.

She teaches us a lot about acceptance and embracing outside cultures and people, etc.
